G-Smarakam Memorial

Competition Entry

The G-Smarakam is a tribute to G Sankara Kurup, the famous port, essayist, lyricist, Member of Indian Parliament and literary critic of Malayalam literature. Some of his lifetime achievements include his contributions to the Malayalam Literature, the Jnanpith Award and the Padma Bhushan. The site is located in Marine Drive, in a calm green part of Kochi. The design intent is to have a building that quietly blends in with the surrounding vegetation and serves as calm place for gathering, silent reading and contemplation to pay homage to the poet’s presence in Keralan legacy, with congregation spaces in the form of amphitheatre, an auditorium space, lounge and library, meeting rooms and cafe. The form pays respect to Kerala artisans and their craftmanship, which can be seen in the intrincate carving details on the rafters of the sloping roof. The roof has a massive 4m overhang with radial rafters that slope up to merge together at unconventional angles creating an asymmetrically pitched roof covered in terracotta and glass tiles. This gives an essence of the traditional but with touches of contemporary.
